Chitwan is a wild environment, and your safety is our top priority. By following a few simple guidelines, you can ensure a thrilling yet completely secure adventure in the heart of the jungle.

Wildlife Safety Protocol

Incidents with wildlife are rare but entirely preventable when safety rules are strictly followed. While tigers are a main attraction, the Greater One-Horned Rhino poses the most significant physical threat due to its size and territorial nature.

  • Listen to Your Guide: This is the golden rule. Our nature guides undergo rigorous training to interpret animal behavior and ensure your safety. Never deviate from their instructions.
  • Maintain Distance: Never approach animals, especially a mother with young calves or cubs. Your guide will tell you when you are at a safe viewing distance.
  • No Night Walking: Do not walk outside designated lodge areas or village boundaries at night. Wild rhinos and elephants frequently roam near the park borders after dark looking for crops.
  • Canoe Safety: Keep your hands and feet inside the dugout canoe at all times, as the Rapti River is populated by both Mugger and Gharial crocodiles.

Health Information

Preparation is key for jungle health. While the region is much safer today due to eradication efforts, taking basic health precautions is advised.

  • Malaria: While historically devastating to non-local populations (unlike the indigenous Tharu people), malaria is now largely controlled in Chitwan. Still, prevention is best. Use strong repellent and cover up during dusk and dawn. Consult your doctor regarding anti-malarial medication.
  • Vaccinations: We recommend visitors be up-to-date on standard travel vaccinations for Nepal, including Typhoid, Hepatitis A and B, and Rabies.
  • Water Safety: Drink only bottled or actively purified water. Avoid ice in drinks unless you are certain it was made from purified water.
  • Emergency Medical Care: Note that there are no major emergency medical facilities immediately next to the park. The closest major hospital is in Bharatpur (approx. 2 hours away by vehicle). Bring any essential personal medications with you.
